We are committed to generating long-term value for Tanzania while ensuring that the Mwadui community thrives alongside our operations — balancing economic performance with environmental stewardship and social responsibility.

Zero Harm
We maintain a rigorous safety culture aimed at "Zero Harm," preventing significant incidents through proactive risk management and adherence to international standards like ISO 14001.
Land Rehabilitation
Mining is a temporary use of land. We rehabilitate disturbed areas through backfilling and revegetation, returning them to a stable, productive state.
Waste Management
Our Environmental Management Plan governs hazardous materials, dust control and waste reduction. Wastewater is recycled back to the plant; tailings are dry-stacked, and metals are segregated for re-use.
Growing Back
What We Use
Tree Seedlings Project: to combat local deforestation, the mine operates a tree nursery. Seedlings are used for on-site rehabilitation and distributed to surrounding communities to promote local reforestation.
Controlled Forest Harvesting: in collaboration with surrounding villagers, we manage a protocol for sustainable access to parts of the mine lease area — allowing safe, regulated firewood collection, reducing illegal incursions and protecting forest integrity.

WDL maintains its social license with surrounding communities through continuous engagement with both leaders and residents. Geographically, WDL is surrounded by 12 village communities.
Corporate Social Responsibility
WDL's CSR Program was incepted in 2010 under "The Stakeholder Engagement Policy." Projects focus on sustainable activities in education, livestock & crop quality, water schemes, environmental initiatives, health, and women's and youth economic groups — all in support of the National Government's Millennium Vision 2025.
Our infrastructure legacy includes 24 classrooms, 11 school offices, 5 village government offices, 10 staff quarters, 5 school ablution blocks and 12 motorcycles for village use — alongside a 2019 Memorandum of Understanding contributing TZS 360 million to the Kishapu District Council for nine community development projects.

A Family Rehoused
Williamson Diamonds Mine initiative to construct an alternative housing project in response to the tragic mud dam burst incident at NG'WANG'HOLO village showcases a profound commitment to community welfare and social responsibility. Commissioned by Williamson Diamonds Mine, this project addresses the urgent need for shelter for families affected by the disaster that struck on November 7, 2022. With compassion and efficiency, Williamson Diamonds Mine has constructed a total of 48 houses, providing safe and sustainable accommodation for those impacted by the calamity. The construction of these houses represents more than just infrastructure development; it embodies a collaborative effort between Williamson Diamonds Mine, and the local community to restore dignity and stability to the lives of those affected. This endeavor underscores the company's commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and communities, embodying the principles of compassion, solidarity, and sustainable development. .
District, Regional & National Initiatives
WDL sponsors strategic initiatives at district, regional and national levels — supporting the small-scale mining sector through FEMATA, TAWOMA and SHIREMA, alongside women's and youth empowerment, disaster relief and sports. Notable contributions include TZS 60 million for Kagera earthquake relief, an ultra-modern theatre at Kishapu District Hospital, and clearing utility debts at Kolandoto Hospital.
WDL has donated multiple 4x4 vehicles to Kishapu District Police, rebuilt fire-damaged infrastructure at Shinyanga Secondary School, and supported ward-level classroom construction during the COVID-19 crisis.

Means, Beyond the Mine
Environmental
Over 340,000 tree seedlings distributed regionally. Dam maintenance sustains settlements, fishing and agriculture; controlled firewood harvesting supports daily village needs.
Financial
Taxes paid to government increase district, regional and national earnings — advocating further development of the country.
Engineering
Free water and electricity to government institutions in the Mine Camp, plus technical support for renovation, construction and road infrastructure — including assistance to local schools.
Employment
Blue- and white-collar opportunities provide income and standard-of-living support, with top priority given to host communities.
Health
Quality services from the Mwadui Hospital and a CTC centre combating HIV/AIDS, with technical and human resources provided free of charge.
Safety
The Tanzania Police Force is a major ally — receiving assistance, and technical resources, including emergency response support.
Local Content
WDL prides itself on procuring the majority of goods and services from within Tanzania — boosting the local economy and improving the standard of living of surrounding communities.
